5 Tips on How to Spot and Avoid Greenwashing

greenwashing

Ever pick up a product in the store, see words like “eco-friendly” or “natural,” and think, Finally! A safe, green option for my family!? Yeah, I’ve been there!

Companies know that more of us want to choose healthier, sustainable options, so they slap trendy, feel-good words on their packaging to grab our attention.

But here’s the thing: not all products with a green label are actually good for you or the planet.

This sneaky marketing trick is called greenwashing, and it’s designed to make you think you’re making a better choice, even when you’re not.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, or even duped by the endless stream of “green” products out there, don’t worry. I’m here to help you cut through the noise so you can confidently make choices that align with your values.

What Is Greenwashing?

Greenwashing happens when companies use misleading language, imagery, or claims to appear more eco-friendly or non-toxic than they actually are. It’s all about selling you the idea of sustainability without backing it up with real, meaningful practices.

For example:

  • A bottle of cleaning spray labeled “natural” might still contain harmful chemicals.
  • A skincare product with “eco” in the name could be packaged in plastic and tested on animals.
  • That trendy bamboo utensil set? It might be made with adhesives full of formaldehyde.

Why Greenwashing Matters

Greenwashing isn’t just a marketing ploy, it’s harmful. It can:

  • Hurt your health: You might unknowingly bring toxic products into your home.
  • Waste your money: You’re paying a premium for products that don’t deliver on their promises.
  • Damage the planet: Fake “green” companies often don’t have sustainable practices, so their products still contribute to pollution and waste.

And let’s be real: It’s exhausting to feel like you’re doing all this research just to get tricked into buying something that’s no better than the alternatives.

5 Steps to Avoid Greenwashing

Here are simple, actionable steps to help you avoid falling into the greenwashing trap:

1. Look Beyond Buzzwords

Words like “natural,” “eco-friendly,” and “green” aren’t regulated, so companies can use them however they want. Instead, look for specifics:

  • Does the product list why it’s eco-friendly?
  • Are there certifications like USDA Organic, EWG Verified, or Fair Trade?

2. Read the Ingredients

When it comes to personal care or cleaning products, flip the package over and check the ingredients list. If you see vague terms like “fragrance” or a long list of chemicals you can’t pronounce, that’s a red flag.

3. Research the Brand

Do a quick online search to learn about the company. Are they transparent about their practices? Do they share where their materials come from or how their products are made?

4. Beware of Pretty Packaging

A brown paper label or a leafy green design might make a product look sustainable, but it doesn’t mean it actually is. Focus on what’s inside the packaging, not the marketing.

5. Follow Trusted Resources

Stick with brands and websites that you trust to give honest, non-toxic recommendations. And don’t be afraid to ask questions!

Google (or Grab an App) for Unknown Ingredients

Apps like Think Dirty or EWG’s Healthy Living can scan ingredients and break down the safety of each. These are a great place to start.

But, the only app that I full trust is Clearya. You can scan any product, it will let you know any ingredients of concern and will also give you safer alternatives.

You can also link this up with your Amazon account and it will rate the products that you add to your cart.
